![]() ![]() Names and email addresses are obviously personal data. Personal data - Personal data is any information that relates to an individual who can be directly or indirectly identified. Below are some of the most important ones that we refer to in this article: The GDPR defines an array of legal terms at length. There are two tiers of penalties, which max out at €20 million or 4% of global revenue (whichever is higher), plus data subjects have the right to seek compensation for damages. ![]() Second, the fines for violating the GDPR are very high. We talk more about this in another article. Scope, penalties, and key definitionsįirst, if you process the personal data of EU citizens or residents, or you offer goods or services to such people, then the GDPR applies to you even if you’re not in the EU. The GDPR entered into force in 2016 after passing European Parliament, and as of May 25, 2018, all organizations were required to be compliant. Two months after that, Europe’s data protection authority declared the EU needed “a comprehensive approach on personal data protection” and work began to update the 1995 directive. In 2011, a Google user sued the company for scanning her emails. In 2000, a majority of financial institutions offered online banking. In 1994, the first banner ad appeared online. But already the Internet was morphing into the data Hoover it is today. So in 1995 it passed the European Data Protection Directive, establishing minimum data privacy and security standards, upon which each member state based its own implementing law. The right to privacy is part of the 1950 European Convention on Human Rights, which states, “Everyone has the right to respect for his private and family life, his home and his correspondence.” From this basis, the European Union has sought to ensure the protection of this right through legislation.Īs technology progressed and the Internet was invented, the EU recognized the need for modern protections. In this article, we try to demystify the GDPR and, we hope, make it less overwhelming for SMEs concerned about GDPR compliance. Maybe you don’t have time to read the whole thing. Maybe you haven’t even found the document itself yet (tip: here’s the full regulation). If you’ve found this page - “what is the GDPR?” - chances are you’re looking for a crash course. As the GDPR continues to be interpreted, we’ll keep you up to date on evolving best practices. We also offer tips on privacy tools and how to mitigate risks. While it is not a substitute for legal advice, it may help you to understand where to focus your GDPR compliance efforts. We created this website to serve as a resource for SME owners and managers to address specific challenges they may face. The regulation itself is large, far-reaching, and fairly light on specifics, making GDPR compliance a daunting prospect, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). With the GDPR, Europe is signaling its firm stance on data privacy and security at a time when more people are entrusting their personal data with cloud services and breaches are a daily occurrence. The GDPR will levy harsh fines against those who violate its privacy and security standards, with penalties reaching into the tens of millions of euros. The regulation was put into effect on May 25, 2018. Though it was drafted and passed by the European Union (EU), it imposes obligations onto organizations anywhere, so long as they target or collect data related to people in the EU. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the toughest privacy and security law in the world. This GDPR overview will help you understand the law and determine what parts of it apply to you. What is the GDPR? Europe’s new data privacy and security law includes hundreds of pages’ worth of new requirements for organizations around the world.

![]() ![]() Bowen says that electronic translators provide the opportunity for some students to compare and contrast the English language with their native language, allowing them to better understand English. We have talked about these issues connected to other forms of technology, but they are also applicable to electronic translators as well.Įducators such as Tim Bowen state that it depends on the student if electronic translators are useful to their learning English. If you are interested in these topics, read our blog’s past posts. There is also the issue of the cost of electronic translators, who has them, and what power dynamics they can create between students. The main concerns that electronic translators create are the lack reliability to produce the correct translation, and hold students back from learning. When teachers choose to use dictionaries over electronic translators it can be because they believe that “deciphering a word’s meaning based on context clues builds critical thinking skills”. Research at Johns Hopkins University also found that their students were getting confused with some translations from their electronic translators, and started using online dictionaries instead because they provided better learning. Therefore, these teachers prefer students to physically look up the translation in a language dictionary where it provides all the definitions of a word, and the word in context to a sentence. For beginning English language learners, some teachers say that they have had too many experiences with electronic translators providing the wrong translation due to our complex language. Some teachers call electronic translators a “crutch” to student’s English language learning, especially once they reach a certain fluency in the language. For the purpose of this article, when I refer to the word an “electronic translator,” I am referring to a that translates a word or phrase into a possible equivalent to the persons native language or visa versa, and an “electronic dictionary” is the electronic equivalent to any physical language dictionary, providing all the definitions of a word and the word in the context of a sentence. To start off, I want to provide the definitions of an electronic translator and electronic dictionary. In doing so, I hope that my colleagues can decide what methods they would like to use when they teach English language learners. In this blog post, I hope to provide you with information from both sides of the debate. I need to emphasise that doesn’t mean it sounds like dopey nu metal or whatever, it’s still Swedish technical death metal but with a groove and bounce that builds on what this band is capable of doing. It backs up into ‘The Faultless’, a real ass shaking song that is remarkably catchy and could be used for pole dancing. Again it has a lot of that old school tone with an evolving sense of melody. You’re waiting for blast beats but this is Meshuggah, so instead you get the jagged, off kilter ‘I Am That Thirst’ – a war cry for fans with more melodic leads and a ton of groove. It’s a dissonant riff of layered guitars that is black metal in tone and approach. ‘Black Cathedral’ is another one that stands out as it subverts expectations. Even though guitarist Mårten Hagström has handled much of the songwriting this time around, there is a breadth to the sound that keeps it engaging across the 13 tracks. It’s much more immediate, that’s a good thing, and there is a tremendous breakdown. It takes a minute to reorientate after that, with ‘Kaleidoscope’ giving us Kidman again in all his throaty glory. The answer to my opening question is here – this song must have been fun to compose, record and give birth to. It’s desperate in the later half, churning through melodies over the groove, and it almost descends into a psychedelic death metal jam, but Meshuggah are too tight and well drilled for such recklessness. At one point the leads sound like police sirens before returning to groove. How dare they? To just hammer for so long without regard for the listener’s necks or general wellbeing. There is an attention to detail that betrays their prog inclinations, Haake cites Metallica’s ‘Orion’ as a reference point, as it twists and turns into something unholy and majestically heavy. It reveals itself as a riff monster of the highest magnitude. Listen carefully to the interplay between guitars. When I first heard it at the album premiere I was gobsmacked at the audacity of throwing this smack bang into the middle of the album without warning. It’s pretty flawless for the first half and then we hit the track everyone will be talking about – the near 10 minute instrumental ‘They Move Below’. The slower and more deliberate tempo creates a groove that is intoxicating and, dare I say it, catchy? The leads are melodic with more of a tapping/prog influence before building to the climax. The riffing is much more doom metal or even stoner than they’ve sounded before. ‘Phantoms’ and ‘God He Sees In Mirrors’ are similar in embracing a classic sound, but ‘Ligature Marks’ is a stand out. ‘ Light the Shortening Fuse’ is even more sonically messed up, a stomach churning series of syncopated riffs that threaten to separate soul from body. Fredrik Thordendal’s solo is sick too, an air guitarist’s dream. It’s a full aural pummelling that makes your bones shake with reverberation. Whilst the band themselves refrain from the word, this is what is meant by djent riffing. By the time Kidman unleashes his growl, we are onto the first single ‘ The Abysmal Eye’, a great track that is more old school than one might expect. As an opener, the sense of impending doom is anxiety inducing and threatening. There’s a melodic lead that adds to the tension, though it’s a more restrained and menacing vocal from Jens Kidman than one might expect. The thundering synopation of drums, bass and guitar kicks off ‘Broken Cog’ with a repetitive hammering that will make your neck jar at odd angles. ![]() Much of it will remind old school fans of why they fell for Meshuggah in the first place, but there are also a few key points of difference that make Immutable a stand out album among a loaded discography. ![]() Their ninth album, and first since 2016’s awesome The Violent Sleep of Reason, is their longest, with 13 tracks in 66 minutes. The push and pull between legacy and evolution runs right through Immutable. The great thing about Meshuggah is that even though their sound is so particular and specific that it is instantly identifiable, even among the tributes and mimicry, they continue to push themselves and find new ways of engaging with their core sound. How does a band like Meshuggah, whose legacy and influence continues to be felt through the modern metal scene, keep themselves interested and entertained? As drummer Tomas Haake told me back in January, they stay inside their little bubble and stick to “what we do”. During last year’s Freedom Convoy in downtown Ottawa, Mendicino repeatedly stated that invoking the Emergencies Act was done at the request of law enforcement. Earlier this year, assurances from Mendicino that illegal Chinese police stations in Canada had been shut down were proved false after reports that two such offices in Montreal had continued operating under the government’s nose. Mendicino then said that his office knew of the impending transfer since March, but that information wasn’t passed on to him. Most recently, Mendicino claimed no knowledge of plans to transfer serial killer Paul Bernardo to a medium-security facility, despite Correctional Service of Canada officials informing his office of the move on two separate occasions.
